C2-7 District Article

Huskies Make it to C2-7 Finals

by Coach Hale

Heading into the season, we knew our subdistrict assignment would be a challenge.  It didn’t disappoint.  We earned the #3 seed which afforded us an opportunity to play Summerland for the third time.  In the previous meetings, we lost in overtime and by 21.  The kids took the opportunity to heart and had a good week of practice leading into the postseason.

We came out strong on Tuesday, to gain a 10-7 advantage in the first behind some aggressive offensive play as evidenced by making 5 free throws in the first quarter.  We then hit three 3’s in the second quarter to keep our offense going.  The third quarter saw both offenses heat up, but we were able to keep pace with some hot shooting by the Bobcats.  They hit 9 three’s in the second half to tie the game up late in the fourth quarter.  A three by Andrew Rentschler put us back on top and then forced a tough shot on the last possession of the game to get the win.

It was a good overall team effort, everyone contributed.  When you collect 19 offensive rebounds against a good team, that’s great effort.  Individually, Lincoln Konrad 16 points, 11 rebounds.  Ian Larons 16 points, 6 rebounds and Zach Hooey had 6 points, 10 rebounds.  Andrew scored 11 points and had 4 steals.

In the sub district final game on Thursday, we traveled back to Tilden to take on #1 seed Elkhorn Valley in another third time meeting.  The Falcons had dispatched the Plainview Pirates on Tuesday, 81-47.  Offensively, we didn’t play a bad game.  We had 21 offensive rebounds, 24 points in the paint and shot decent from 3, hitting 5/16, but EV made shots early and often.  They made 14/19 from 3-point land and turned us over defensively to lead to 30 points off turnovers.  In other words, we didn’t play badly or lack effort, we just met a good team that was playing with alot of confidence.

Individually, Lincoln scored 16 with 8 rebounds, Weston Mathis was 3/3 from three point land and Zach Hooey led us in assists with 5.

The Huskies ended their season with a 13-10 record.  Summerland was able to snag the last wildcard spot for district finals and will play EV at EV on Monday, Feb 27.  Up for grabs is a bid to the state tournament.

On behalf of the team, I’d like to thank everyone for their support over the season.
