By Sidney Burkinshaw, Mary Hamilton, and Abigail Thiele, speech team presidents
What kind of Texas cattle goes “beeeep, beeeep?” A longhorn! The “steaks” were high at the Burwell Speech Invite, home of the Longhorns, attended by the West Holt Huskies’ speech team on Saturday, February 11th. Although the team was missing nearly a third of its members, they still managed to come away the champions of the invitational. Now, let’s moo-ve along to the placings!
The novice and varsity competed together at this meet. One novice from each event received a Top Novice Award even though they did not place overall. In duet acting Teagan Butterfield and Hannah Olson placed 3rd and Emersyn Mlady and Peyton Olberding won the Top Novice Award. The team had three entertainment speakers that placed at the meet. Samantha Coffin was 6th, Hannah Olson was 5th, and Drew Martin was 3rd. Elizabeth Olson won the Top Novice Award for extemp. The varsity extemporaneous speakers took the top three spots with Carter Gotschall placing 3rd, Brooklyn Butterfield placing 2nd, and Sidney Burkinshaw taking home the gold. Burkinshaw was also 1st in informative speaking. Peyton Olberding won the Top Novice Award in humorous prose; while overall, Teagan Butterfield was 4th, David Armstrong 3rd, and Mary Belle Hamilton was champion. In persuasive speaking, Cale Deseive placed 5th and Lily Vogel placed 1st. In poetry, Abigail Thiele placed 1st. In POI, Lily Vogel was 6th, Brooklyn Butterfield was 5th, and Alyssa Dobias was 4th. Congratulations to all of those who medaled!
Next week the speech team will travel to Battle Creek. Good luck to all who will compete. While you’re reading, here is another joke for you. What do you call a cow that just gave birth? “De-calf-einated!”
