Boys Win One at N-V
by Coach Hale
The West Holt boys split last week, winning the game at Niobrara-Verdigre on Tuesday and losing on
a buzzer beater at O’Neill St. Mary’s on Thursday.
At Niobrara, the Huskies got the offense going early. The guys created a quicker tempo with their
defense and were able to get some transition points. In the half-court we were more balanced than
what we’ve been the last couple of games. We created 14 steals which led to 19 points.
Individually, the scoring was spread out over 8 players, with our leaders being Weston Mathis and
Lincoln Konrad with 16 each, Drake Nemetz 15, Zach Hooey 10. Zach also led with 10 rebounds.
The JV got the night started on track with a 33-11 win. Andrew Rentschler led the scoring with 14.
We traveled 18 miles east on Thursday to take on a good St. Mary’s team. The Cards were coming
off a win over Boyd County on Tuesday. Our 3 point shooting was balancing our inside game and
transition points were difficult to come by early on. Our defense was very good and kept us in the
game. We got things going better on the offensive end in the third quarter and took a lead into the
fourth quarter. St. Mary’s battled back to tie it up then hit a buzzer beater to win it. It was a tough
loss to take, but we played hard.
Individually, we were led by Tyler Jelinek with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Lincoln had 8
defensive rebounds and 3 blocks. There was no JV game.
The boys will be hosting Santee (13-3) this Friday at West Holt in our regular season finale.
