Ms. Steph Nemec will be joining us to teach high school science this year! She enjoys walking her pug Mabel, reading, & coaching. Originally from O'Neill, Nebraska, she entered the teaching field non-traditionally. First, she attended college and received her bachelor's and master's degrees in health and wellness. Then, she decided she just couldn't stay away from school, so Ms. Nemec returned to college and the high school classroom to be a science teacher. She taught MS/HS science at Boyd County Schools for the last 4 years. She is excited to be a part of West Holt Public Schools and to get married this coming January!
While this face isn't new to the hallways at West Holt, we are so happy to have Mrs. Mindy Frickel as our new kindergarten teacher!
Mrs. Frickel grew up in Elgin, Nebraska, but has been an Atkinson resident for the past 9 years. She enjoys camping, working out, spending time with family, and running her kids around to all their activities. She was a para at West Holt for 8 years before becoming a kindergarten teacher. This will be her first year teaching kindergarten. She has her associates in Early Childhood Development from Northeast and will be graduating from UNK in December with her Bachelors of the Arts in Education with her major being Early Childhood Inclusive. She and her husband Michael have been married for 9 years and have two children. Her daughter Charlie is 8 and her son Conrad is 6.

Mrs. Sophia Slabaugh will be teaching third grade at West Holt this year. She is from Firth, Nebraska, just south of Lincoln. She enjoys reading, golfing, traveling, baking, attending livestock shows, and spending time with friends and family. She graduated from UNL in 2020 with an animal science degree and worked at the Nebraska Pork Producers as the Education Director. While working there, she was attending online classes at Chadron State College to earn her elementary education degree, which she obtained in 2024. Before coming to West Holt, Mrs. Slabaugh taught at Freemen Elementary as the 5th/6th grade reading teacher. She was married on June 28th to her husband Justin and they have a mini Bernese Mountain Dog named Penny. She is very excited to be teaching at West Holt this upcoming year!

Let's start by welcoming Mrs. Karen Barnes. Orginally from LaVista, Nebraska, Mrs. Barnes will be teaching 5-12 Band and Choir. When she's not teaching she likes to cook, crochet, Cricut, and spend time with her family. Her husband Eric works at Mitchell Equipment and they have 2 daughters: Elsie is 3.5 years old and Sadie is 7 months old! They live in O'Neill, where she taught K-6 Music at St. Mary's and 7-12 Choir at O'Neill High School for the last 7 years. Before that, she taught elementary music in Schuyler for 3 years. She is excited to be making the move to West Holt and looks forward to the beautiful music we're going to make!
