West Holt Speech Runner-up at Creighton!
West Holt is sending 5 seniors off to college on a very high note. Six seniors have been chosen for the RHOP (Rural Health Opportunities Program), KHOP (Kearney Health Opportunities Program).
The KHOP and RHOP programs are an important part of the rural health initiatives on the UNK, WSC, PSC and CSC campuses that are designed to alleviate the health care workforce shortages in our state.
Partnerships between UNK and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, KHOP was launched in 2010 as a pipeline program designed to grow the state’s health care workforce by recruiting and training students from rural Nebraska who are committed to practicing in these communities as professionals. RHOP operates on the same principles only at Wayne State College, Peru State College and Chadron State College. The programs offer financial assistance, academic support and professional development opportunities, with many participants receiving full-tuition scholarships and are guaranteed admission to UNMC.
KHOP/RHOP members can study in the fields of dental hygiene, dentistry, medical laboratory science, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant and radiography.
KHOP participants also receive a $3,000 room waiver through the KHOP Learning Community. A requirement for freshmen, the one-year residential learning community gives students a chance to explore various health care careers while receiving support and guidance as they transition to college. KHOP members meet with health care providers and tour medical facilities throughout the region, better preparing them for professional school and beyond.
West Holt students awarded these very competitive scholarships are:
RHOP – Wayne State College – Miya Carey - Pharmacy
RHOP – Peru State College – Abby Mathis - Nursing
RHOP – Chadron State College – Rylee Poessnecker - Nursing
KHOP – University of Nebraska-Kearney – Addie Karo - Medicine
KHOP – University of Nebraska-Kearney – Sidney Burkinshaw – Medical Laboratory Science

West Holt Senior receives Kearney Law Opportunities Program scholarship
Jack Hoffman, a senior at West Holt, was recently named as a recipient of the KLOP - the Kearney Law Opportunities Program (KLOP) for 2024-25. It is a partnership between the University of Nebraska at Kearney and the University of Nebraska College of Law, designed to recruit high school students from rural Nebraska and prepare them to eventually return and practice law in rural Nebraska. To apply, you must have applied and been admitted to the University of Nebraska at Kearney. The program is very competitive.
Students selected for KLOP will receive a full tuition scholarship to UNK for up to 120 credit hours.
Each KLOP student receives one-on-one mentorship from the Pre-Law/KLOP faculty adviser throughout their time at UNK.
KLOP students receive numerous career and professional development opportunities, including preferred access to law-related internships; frequent visits to the UNL College of Law; regular interactions with attorneys, judges and current law students; and extensive undergraduate research opportunities.
As a KLOP student, you will have the opportunity to participate in two field study courses during your time at UNK: (1) a one-week trip to the southern United States to learn about the politics and law of the US civil rights movement; and (2) a two-week trip to Europe to learn about international human rights law.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree at UNK, this program guarantees a student’s acceptance into Nebraska College of Law at UNL, provided minimum requirements are met (GPA, LSAT score).
